THE GAS CAR PROJECT

A public Intervention with Samah Hijawi in in the streets of Amman, 2009

The Gas Car Project is a work that engages the audience of an entire city through a unique phenomenon to Amman; pick-ups that distribute gas cylinders to the houses, who use a melody transmitted on a megaphone to announce their presence to the inhabitants.
In reality, the sound of the melody is the only other sound after the Mosques‘ call for prayer that reaches everyone in the city.
The use of sound as a medium will (in its physical nature) reach a very large number of the inhabitants of the city. The project also hopes to engage people in thinking and discussing this daily occurrence in Jordanian life.
A Discussion around the project was facilitated on the blog.
The project was funded by the European Union and the Goethe Institute Amman.
